Optimizing a blend of focused and peripheral light, the streamlined Spot produces an amazing amount of light for a lamp that fits in your pocket. Housed in a reflector, the one-watt LED throws a far-reaching beam, plenty strong enough for pre-dawn approaches or route finding during a through-the-night single push. When all you need is close-range light, switch modes and use the three proximity LEDs, which emit ambient light for more than 140 hours. A single switch on top lets you choose from four lighting levels for both modes min, mid, max and strobe, to dial-in the light output to your needs. The batteries-up-front design works great for reading when you're tent-bound while waiting for a weather window.

lightweight, 1W LED compares w/ halogen My wife and climber daughter both use the Spot as well as myself. I've always liked halogen bulbs for penetrating the wilderness night when required. A side by side test in the wilderness with an old BD halogen and the Spot's 1Watt LED was fairly close. Add the benefit of the Spot light weight, integrated AAA batteries in the lamp and the inherent low energy consumption of the LED's combination's and you have an excellent piece of ultralight backpacking/climbing gear. I wouldn't recommend this for a constant use headlamp as the construction is rather flimsy. I've read other reviews about the hinge failing; I hold my breath when I change the batteries. The switching tends to get a bit busy with the hi/mid/lo/flashing settings for a total of eight combination's. I don't need that much choice in the woods, hi/lo would be fine.
